In diesem Seminar wird untersucht, wie staatliche Instutionen und demokratische Prozesse im Alltag erfahrbar werden. Anhand ethnographischer Studien aus unterschiedlichen Teilen der Welt wird analysiert, wie Menschen den Staat wahrnehmen, mit ihm interagieren und seine Strukturen für sich zu nutzen versuchen. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt postkolonialen Perspektiven und der Frage, inwiefern Staat und Demokratie als Produkte europäischer Geschichte mit lokalen Vorstellungen von guter Herrschaft in anderen kulturellen Kontexten in Spannung stehen.
