Mixed methods became the "third methodological movement" (Tashakori and Teddlie, 2003) and publications in that field increased within the last years. Knowledge and experience with mixed methods research became a highly demanded skill for researchers in social sciences. But how does it work? And what are prospects, challenges and limitations in these approaches?
This class provides an overview of methodological foundation if mixed methods, different research designs and methods of combination. A focus will be put on migration and transnationalism studies, which are influenced by high interdisciplinarity and a strong tradition of methodological reflections (like "methodological nationalism" (Wimmer and Glick Schiller, 2002) or the "ethnic lens" (Glick Schiller et al., 2006). Our readings cover theoretical, methodological but also empirical literature. During the semester, students will also have the opportunity to learn about recent mixed methods research projects at the "Center on Migration, Citizenship and Development" (COMCAD) at the Faculty of Sociology (Bielefeld University).
The class is open for everyone who is open to discuss the prospects and challenges of mixed methods research in the area of transnationalism and migration studies. It is necessary to have basic knowledge about different research methods in sociology. Additionally, students should be interested in questions of migration and transnationalism as well as their methodological foundations. The language of instruction is English. Students are encouraged to write their final papers (Hausarbeiten) in English.

Die verbindlichen Modulbeschreibungen enthalten weitere Informationen, auch zu den "Leistungen" und ihren Anforderungen. Sind mehrere "Leistungsformen" möglich, entscheiden die jeweiligen Lehrenden darüber.
Students are expected to attend, read the literature before the respective class and participate, formulate questions, make comments, and raise issues during the class time. Moreover, students have to give a presentation (in groups) on a topic of choice from the further readings which would lead to class discussion.
For a grading (benotete Einzelleistung) students need to write a final paper (Hausarbeit) on a topic related to the class subject.
