Soziale Ungleichheit ist ein zeitloses Phänomen, aber sie wurde in verschiedenen Epochen der Geschichte unterschiedlich gedeutet und beruhte auf unterschiedlichen Kriterien. Werden heute meist ökonomische oder kulturelle Gründe dafür verantwortlich gemacht und zugleich als Problem markiert, basierte Ungleichheit in der Ständegesellschaft stärker auf der Zuschreibung von Ehre und Ansehen, wobei eine ökonomisch solide Basis meist vorausgesetzt wurde. Quer dazu liegen Ungleichheiten, die über Geschlecht, Religion oder ethnische Zugehörigkeit konstruiert wurden. Im Grundkurs soll ausgeleuchtet werden, welche Folgen soziale Ungleichheit für den Einzelnen wie für den Aufbau und die Entwicklung der jeweiligen Gesellschaften insgesamt hatte. Dabei behandelt das Seminar ein breites Themenspektrum, das von der Armenfürsorge über Revolten, die Organisation von Arbeitsverhältnissen oder Protestbewegungen bis hin zu den ideengeschichtlichen Konzepten von Armut und Reichtum reicht.

Die Veranstaltung setzt den Grundkurs (Teil 1) des Sommersemesters 2019 fort. Eine Teilnahme ist nur möglich, wenn Teil 1 erfolgreich besucht wurde.
