"Eitle Nebensächlichkeiten, die sie zu sein scheinen, haben Kleiden, so sagen sie, wichtigere Aufgaben als nur die, uns warm zu halten. Sie verändern unser Bild der Welt und das Bild der Welt von uns." (Woolf, Orlando)
Das Seminar stellt sich systematisch Fragen nach Aspekten von Mode und Kleidung in literarischen Texten der Moderne. Seien es die gelben Schuhe, die die Bewohner der Kleinstadt Güllen in Dürrenmatts 'Besuch der alten Dame' an den Füßen tragen, seien es die unsichtbaren Gewänder, mit denen Andersen seinen Kaiser durch die Straßen schreiten ließ, die feinen Stoffe, die einen einfachen Schneider zum Grafen machen können (Keller), oder sei es die im Roman wechselnde geschlechtliche Performanz von Kleidung, die sich in Virginia Woolfs 'Orlando' herausstellen lässt. Wir wollen versuchen, uns den Zusammenhängen von Kleidung und Welt, Körper, Geschlecht und Ökonomie aus der literarischen Lektüre heraus zu stellen.
Es handelt sich bei dem Seminar um einen Lektürekurs: Hohe Lesebereitschaft wird also vorausgesetzt.
