In this seminar we will examine various theoretical approaches to migration literature, primarily from postcolonial studies, and read a range of literary texts that explore experiences of primarily forced or precarious migration. We will discuss how these texts represent experiences of migrancy and reflect on the so-called "age of migration", as well as the position of the reader and/or the citizen in these texts. We will also pursue a meta-discussion of migration literature. That is, we will discuss issues such as: what frameworks, expectations and desires do we -- as European readers -- bring to these texts? What critical questions dominate in the scholarly and popular discussion of these texts, and what discourses do these questions spring from? Are there other questions we might also ask about migration literature? In doing so, we will discuss how migration literature might "teach" (or be expected to teach) non-migrants something, and how we might teach and discuss this literature in an educational setting.
