The aim of this course is to give you the analytical tools to analyse and interpret literary texts in the genres of drama (Measure for Measure) and verse (narrative poetry, e.g. Beowulf; and lyrical poetry, e.g. sonnets). As you see, our primary material will be mainly early modern (W. Shakespeare; Elizabethan/Jacobean lit).
Our discussions will be based on what you learnt or are currently learning in the Analysing lecture(s), so connections between all three BM2 courses will be made.
Beowulf, translated and introduced by Seamus Heaney, faber & faber, 2000 [extract will be provided]
William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure, ed. Brian Gibbons, New Cambridge Shakespeare, Cambridge University Press [please buy a copy]
Renaissance sonnets [will be provided]
