Gegenstand von Sallusts historischer Monographie ist die Auseinandersetzung Roms mit dem Numiderkönig Iugurtha, die aufgrund von Bestechung und Korruption innerhalb der römischen Funktionselite, so Sallusts Darstellung, zunächst erfolglos verläuft. Erst nach einem energischen Eingreifen des römischen Volks wendet sich das Blatt. Damals sei man, so Sallust, zum ersten Mal der Anmaßung und Korruption der römischen Funktionselite entgegengetreten.
Sallust ist ein Meister der Dramaturgie von Ereignissen und der Erzähltechnik. Wir werden ihm im Rahmen des Seminars quasi über die Schulter schauen und die literarischen Techniken analysieren, derer er sich bedient. Daneben werden andere Probleme und Fragen der Sallustforschung zur Sprache kommen. Ziel ist es, die TeilnehmerInnen zu eigenständigem philologischen Arbeiten hinzuführen.

Erwartet werden regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme sowie Vor- und Nachbereitung der Veranstaltungen. Jede/r Teilnehmer/in übernimmt ein Referat/einen Bericht. Die Veranstaltung allein wird mit 2 LP kreditiert.
Entscheidet sich der/die Teilnehmer/in, eine Belegarbeit (20 Seiten) zu schreiben, so wird diese (Bestehen vorausgesetzt) mit 4 LP kreditiert.
