Zur Organisation moderner Gesellschaften gehört auch die Unterteilung der Bürger in Kategorien, wie z.B. Geschlecht, Rasse, Alter oder religiöse Zurgehörigkeit. Diese Kategorien sind allerdings selten wertneutral, sodass "anders sein" oft zu Erfahrungen von Diskriminierung, Unterdrückung oder Ausschließung führt. Im Seminar soll der Begriff 'Differenz' theoretisch verankert und seine Bedeutung für den sozialen Alltag im modernen Europa historisch untersucht werden. Dazu werden einerseits Schlüsseltexte und -Ideen der Differenzforschung vorgestellt, wie etwa von Michel Foucault, Kimberlé Crenshaw und Edward Said. Andererseits werd der konkrete Umgang mit Differenz in der modernen Geschichte Europas beleuchtet. Besonderer Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei der Umgang mit religiöser Andersartigkeit, wie er sich in Vorwürfen von Blasphemie oder Häresie manifestiert.
