In this seminar we will read recent theories of utopian societies, particularly in the context of climate change, concentrating in particular on Kate Soper's "Post-Growth Living: For an alternative hedonism" (Verso, 2020). After reading and discussing contemporary theories of utopia, students will embark on an independent project to analyse a utopian project of their choice - either an example of practice, or in literatur, TV, film etc - using these theories. The seminar will conclude with a student conference (block) where students present their independent research.
