230715 Englisch: English Academic Writing I (S) (SoSe 2021)

Contents, comment

The focus of the course will be producing 4 different texts which will be edited and revised based on notes given by the teacher.

- A homework script will be used for weekly exercises in grammar and English writing techniques. A key part of the course is weekly in-class online group writing projects using Epads which are guided and supervised by the teacher.

- Individual Zoom conferences will also take place during the semester so that each student has the opportunity to ask questions and receive specific feedback on their writing.

- The 4 texts will, in the end, be organized and edited to produce 2 major writing projects: a short story analysis and a news article summary which compares two sides of a topic.

Genauere Informationen zu Umfang, Dauer und Anforderungen werden den Teilnehmern zu Beginn der Veranstaltung mitgeteilt.

If your primary English writing experience was in school writing texts or summaries -- with no revision or rewriting required -- and for which only marks and a grade were given, then this course is for you. However, if you have previous experience revising, editing and rewriting texts in English then "Academic Writing II" is most likely the course you should take.

"Academic Writing I" will teach you the university-level native-speaker approach to academic writing in English. We will cover the structures and organizational techniques common in English academic writing, as well as the typical processes native-speakers use for the revision, editing and rewriting of texts in English. Further, students will learn the most important Academic English phrases and vocabulary used.

Four types of English writing will be covered in this course:
- An Intro-Background text: describing the details necessary to understand the body of a text or article
- A Comparison Summary text: covering the common academic English phrases and organizational structures used when comparing the details of two or more dissimilar topics
- A Sequential Events Descriptive Summary: typical when describing chronological events or processes, e.g. historical events, a short story or a scientific process
- A Conclusion-Summary: this comes at the end of an article, article summary, analysis or research paper

Regular participation in the weekly class sessions is required. Because of the high amount of in-class exercise and workshop writing, if a student misses more than 20% of the class meetings, an extra writing project will be required to prove proficiency in the techniques covered during the class sessions.

Required Projects: completing 4 progressively revised and edited English texts, each of which will go through several states of revision and rewriting, including specific notes on the texts as well as personalized Zoom conferences.
