Note that university-level English Academic Writing has a rather rigid (and linear) approach to text organization, structure, vocabulary and form. The techniques and traditions for writing "Academic English" are significantly different from writing the typical school version of a Personal Essay or a Text Summary (which are the styles of English writing most students learn in school).
In Academic Writing II we will cover the methods used in academic English for:
- researching: determining topic relevance in selecting supporting details
- pre-writing: the organizing and structuring of information
- paraphrasing (including synonym research)
- standard writing, revision and editing techniques
Students should expect to spend between 1-2 hours each week on their writing and homework exercises. A weekly homework script will be used which contains the reading and writing assignments as well as problem exercise sets on paraphrasing, revision, editing and rewriting techniques as used in English academic writing.
Please note that weekly participation in the (weekly) Friday class sessions is required. Students who will miss more than 3 classes should consider waiting to take this course in a future semester. Individual Zoom conferences will take place during the semester to discuss the writing and revisions of the writing assignments.
"Academic Writing II" teaches the university-level native-speaker approach to academic writing in English. Students signing up for this should have previous experience with revision, editing and rewriting texts in English.
