250319 Introduction to Disability Studies (S) (WiSe 2022/2023)

Contents, comment

What is the link between disability studies and inclusive education? One could say that inclusive education addresses the needs of learners with disabilities, which is indeed one possible answer. This seminar will however allow to discover the historical relations between these two fields and to understand that without the disability rights movements and the creation of the academic field of disability studies in the 1980s, we would not be able to apply the principles of a more inclusive education today. During the semester, we will further explore topics such as the various definitions and models of disability, the impact of experiential knowledge on raising disability awareness, or the challenges some students might come across while trying to disclose their disabilities.
