402334 Global Health (S) (WiSe 2021/2022)

Contents, comment

The Global Health module gives students the opportunity to gain a broad overview and critical insights into the current global health landscape. The module is expected to introduce students to the basic theoretical foundations, methodologies and tools in the field of global health from an interdisciplinary perspective. Furthermore, the course will explore and provide critical insights regarding some of the current strategic commitments and agendas, stakeholders and platforms, and the key debates, controversies and challenges in this area.

The Global Health module is divided into a mix of virtual sessions held via Zoom on Thursdays, with a few sessions on Friday morning and several instructor-guided self-study sessions.

In addition to this, students complete a mix of individual and group work before, during and after each session.

The main assessment requirement of the module is the development of a policy brief on a global health topic of the student’s choosing. The module requirement (Studienleistung) is to develop the policy brief and present and discuss this in class. The module assessment (Prüfungsleistung) is to elaborate their idea into a detailed policy brief and submit it for graded assessment.

In WiSe 2021/22, we are hoping to be able to take students on a two-day study tour to Bonn in December 2021 or January 2022. We are currently in discussions within the University and with global health organisations in Bonn to explore whether it will be possible to do so in a safe way and in accordance with Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic regulations. If a study tour is not possible, representatives from these multilateral and German organisations working in global health and related areas, will be invited as guest speakers. These sessions will provide students with valuable and highly relevant real-world insights into the scope, strategic priorities and initiatives of global health agencies. More information will be provided at the start of the semester.

Full details about the Global Health module learning objectives, core competencies, topics and assessment can be found in the module syllabus.
