This course offers students to explore the intricate dynamics of belonging through the lens of othering. In a rapidly evolving global landscape, understanding the nuances of inclusion and exclusion is crucial. This course goes beyond the conventional discussions on belonging and takes a deep dive into the mechanisms of othering. The course addresses definitions of belonging, perspectives on othering, bridging (inclusivity-fostering) and breaking (exclusion-perpetuating) approaches, and discussion sessions related to current issues.
The main instructional approach in this course is discussion, mainly to foster critical thinking and enhance students’ ability to navigate the complexities of belonging and othering. Upon completing the course, students will possess a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms influencing belonging and othering. With the increased awareness on the topic, students will be better prepared to create inclusive learning environments, contribute to positive school cultures, and address current challenges related to belonging and othering in the educational context.
