Als „Agency“ wird gemeinhin eine Handlungsmacht bezeichnet, die sich theoretisch spätestens seit der Herausbildung der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie nicht mehr auf menschliche Subjekte sondern auch Dinge und Objekte erstreckt. Aus Sicht der Kunstgeschichte der Vormoderne waren Bilder häufig bereits mit Eigenschaften und Fähigkeiten ausgestattet, die teilweise durch Praktiken (wie Blättern, Aufklappen, Berühren oder gar Küssen, Einnähen) aktiviert oder verstärkt wurden.
Wir werden uns von daher mit Votivbildern, Effigien, Totenmasken, dem Vera Ikon aber auch Porträts und Reliquiaren auseinandersetzen und uns fragen, wie diese zu heutigen Bildpraktiken in Verbindung stehen.
