Content of teaching: This module aims to present the development of governance debates, from the most hierarchical and centralised authority forms to the newest decentralised and networked ones. At first, the module will introduce global governance and the formation of the multilateral system through different theoretical traditions in International Relations. Subsequently, the module will present the changes introduced to the multilateral system during the 90s and the following debates on governance deficit and the ‘retreat of the state’. The module will then present the development of new forms of governance and hybrid arrangements, concluding with the recent debates on legitimacy and authority diffusion.
Competencies: This module will provide students with an in-depth understanding of the developments in global governance through different theoretical perspectives. They will also acquire a substantive understanding of the transformations in governing arrangements at domestic, regional and international levels, following the most recent debates on its successes and shortcomings. Students will acquire/reinforce their abilities in mapping theoretical debates, producing critical analysis and developing a sustained argumentation.

Requirements of participation: Students are required to attend sessions and read the respective assigned literature previously. During the sessions, students are expected to take notes, engage and comment voluntarily or upon request of the lecturer on the subject discussed. Students will also be expected to produce two papers (one at half term and one at the end of the module), reflecting their learning from the sessions. Each paper will present an argumentative response (3,000 words) to the theme/question proposed by the lecturer two weeks in advance of the deadline. Students should structure their papers based on the course recommended literature, and on the notes taken during the sessions. All sessions will be exclusively in English.
