Im Mittelpunkt des Seminars steht der karibische Raum im Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Mensch und Natur. Dazu werden im ersten Teil des Seminars über die Lektüre theoretischer Zugänge zur Umweltgeschichte und zur sozialen Konstruktion von Risiko- und Raumvorstellungen die Grundlagen geschaffen.
Im zweiten Teil des Seminars steht zum einen die Frage im Mittelpunkt, wie der Mensch auf die Umwelt der Karibik einwirkt und eingewirkt hat (Kolumbus-Austausch; Plantagensystem und Monokulturen). Zum anderen beschäftigen wir uns mit den Auswirkungen verschiedener naturbedingter Ereignisse (Erdbeben, Wirbelstürme, Klimawandel) und Epidemien auf die Gesellschaften in der Region.
Integraler Bestandteil der Veranstaltung ist ein Besuch der SoCaRe (Society for Caribbean Research)-Konferenz, die vom 22. bis 24. Januar 2015 am Zentrum für Interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZiF) stattfinden wird.
