Conrad Ferdinand Meyer zählt neben Theodor Fontane, Wilhelm Raabe und Theodor Storm zu den bedeutendsten Erzählern des deutschsprachigen Spätrealismus. Vornehmlich historische Erzählungen dienten ihm, aktuelle Probleme auf eine Weise zu thematisieren, die sich durch eine hoch reflektierte Erzählkunst auszeichnet. Dabei zeichnen sich zum einen die Grenzen eines realistischen Kunstverständnisses ab, zum anderen wird deutlich, was die Moderne des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts vom 19. Jahrhundert trennt. Über die Interpretation ausgewählter Erzählungen steht die Analyse narrativer Verfahren und der Epochenkonstellationen im Zentrum dieses Seminars.
