Im Seminar soll ausgehend von der kritischen Theorie Theodor W. Adornos ein Blick auf gegenwärtige Herausforderungen für eine kritische Theorie der Bildung geworfen werden. Adorno formulierte in Radiointerviews und Vorträgen bereits Kritik an der ihm gegenwärtigen Bildung. Diese begriff er später als Halbbildung und forderte eine Erziehung zur Autonomie, zur Mündigkeit. Bei Adornos Kritik werden auch gesellschaftliche Tendenzen benannt, die den Bildungsprozess erschweren. Gleichzeitig ist davon auszugehen, dass jene von Adorno benannten Tendenzen heute deutlich fortgeschrittener sind und neue Herausforderungen für Bildung entstanden sind.
Entsprechend wäre mit einer kritischen Theorie der Bildung nach den Möglichkeiten einer gelungenen Bildung zu Fragen und auf die Probleme zu einzugehen, die sich gegenwärtig stellen.Das Seminar versucht zunächst eine kritische Theorie der Bildung zu skizzieren und betrachtet ausgehend von dieser die gegenwärtigen Phänomene Kulturindustrie, Freizeit und Digitalisierung.
