The aim of the seminar is to introduce the field of International and Comparative Education with a focus on school systems in different countries worldwide. Education is a highly nationalized matter with its characteris-tics connected to the sociopolitical, cultural and historical frameworks of each country. Knowledge of the functionality of national systems is important in any discussion of (comparative) education so we can contextualize different educational systems.

Theoretical perspectives and the philosophical ideas that educational systems are based on are crucial in widening this understanding.

Therefore, we will briefly discuss international relations theories in general and reflect about general characteristics of education and school. Preceding from these reflections, we will look specifically at selected national education systems in different regions of the world – including Canada and Germany.

Through the course readings, impulses and discussions, students learn and reflect about different educational systems. The course focusses on gathering knowledge as well as developing a deeper understanding of schools around the world which is based on a multilayered reflection of global variances as well as similarities. Students will be able to explain the role modern international systems play in relation to education.

They will gain knowledge of educational systems in different global regions in order to (1) critically reflect on the ones they are most familiar with and (2) develop a reflexive approach towards some of the challenges different national and local school systems face in specific regional contexts.

Please note that in our joint discussions you have the opportunity to share some thoughts in German, if needed. The seminar is a learning space to get in touch with the English language in the academic context.
