PRACTICAL ORGANISATION

This seminar will take place in "hybrid synchronous" mode, with a twist. Most of the participants will be at home and participate via Zoom - me included. (This is due to my very high risk status vis-à-vis Covid infection.) Those students who have to or want to be on campus at the time of the seminar can go to the seminar room every week and participate together via Zoom there. Instead of breakouts, these students can form actual groups for the interactive group-work phases. These students MUST please have a) their own devices, so they can follow on Zoom and b) headphones with microphones. Your devices' built-in mics and speakers can't be used in a seminar room, as there is massive echo and feedback if others are using also their devices' built-in mics and speakers nearby. When you speak yourself, you might also have to lift the earphones (but still use the earphones' microphone) or mute your speakers, because otherwise there's an annoying echo. This mode should enable those at home and on campus to participate, however, and at-risk participants to be safe.

SEMINAR CONTENT

The seminar "Literature and Culture in the EFL Primary Classroom" will deal with texts for children in a variety of genres, but most prominently picture stories. We will consider their potential for use in teaching English to young learners, but also discuss questions such as, amongst others: authenticity, the multiple affordances of visualisations, the fostering of intercultural competence and methods for working with the texts discussed in the classroom.

Participants will explore theories of how picture books work and analyse the material dealt with as works of literature as well as exploring their potential for use in the primary English classroom. They will also consider how to assess the suitability of multicultural picture books in fostering intercultural communicative competence in the early English classroom and apply theoretical considerations to picture books from and about southern Africa.

In this digital semester, material will be provided via the Lernraum and LR+ and seminar sessions will take place at the designated seminar time via Zoom.

Requirements for participation, required level

Important! This seminar is aimed specifically at students who are studying to become primary school teachers! Any participants who are not studying for the "Lehramt Grundschule" will be asked to choose a seminar more appropriate to their course of study.
Ideally, participants should have completed the two "Analyzing" seminars in BM2 before taking this BM2.3, "Genres, Authors, Periods" seminar.

Part of the Studienleistung will consist of participants presenting picture books of their own choice and "performing" readings of them with elements of the "Storytelling" approach in class, and also creating and presenting their own picture books.

BM2 module papers can be, and often are, written on topics dealt with in this seminar.
