230258 Global Englishes (in English Language Teaching) (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

As a lingua franca, English is used by far more non-native speakers than native speakers in countless sociocultural contexts in our globalized world today. Various research paradigms, such as World Englishes and English as a lingua franca have emerged to investigate these multifaceted uses of English in their own right. Even though they are distinct research paradigms, they all share the endeavor to move towards an understanding of English as complex and moving beyond rigid anglophone yardsticks. Global Englishes can be seen as an umbrella term which unites these efforts. Such changing conceptions of English in turn have an impact on how it needs to be taught at schools to enable our students to access and take part in discourses in which English is used. In order to do so, they need a different set of skills than solely relying on rather traditional, standardized varieties they still mainly encounter in formal educational settings.
In this seminar, we will consider the global use of English and critically evaluate established concepts and dichotomies, such as native/non-native as well as Standard and non-Standard. We will furthermore consider what it means to be able to take part in discourses in which English is used. In a next step, we will then not only discuss potential implications for educational contexts on a theoretical level, but also develop as well as critically reflect our own practical ideas.
