This course is mandatory for all students planning to start their Praxissemester in February 2022. Please note: In winter term 2021, there are three VPS classes available in English (with the others taking place on Wednesday). However, you only need to take ONE of these!
In this class, we will focus on issues related to classroom interaction in ELT such as error correction, comprehensible input, the use of the L1(s), praising (!), and methodology (with a special focus on making learners communicate in English). We will explore these issues with the help of video material from authentic, inclusive English classrooms. In doing so, we will cover the basics of classroom research needed for your practical term, develop first research questions, and draft one research project.
Please note: This course will most likely take place as a mixture of presence meetings and asynchronous working phases. I will try to combine the benefits of presence and online teaching as well as possible with your personal needs and of course we'll keep a good eye on the development of the Covid19-pandemic when making our decisions.
As of now (July 2021), the plan looks as follows:
- we meet in presence, i.e. at university, on 18 Oct, 8 Nov, 15 Nov, 22 Nov, 13 Dec, 24 Jan and 31 Jan
- on the other dates, you will work on tasks asynchronously; you will be free to do so in our seminar room (where I will be available for questions, discussions etc.) or online

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
