Amerigo Vespucci (1451-1512) war Leiter einer Handelsniederlassung der Medici in Sevilla. Er nahm an vier Entdeckungsreisen nach Mittel- und Südamerika teil. Über die dritte schrieb er einen Brief an Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici auf Italienisch, der bald ins Lateinische übersetzt wurde. In seinem Bericht schildert Vespucci ausführlich die Sitten und Bräuche der Einwohner, z.B. Piercing, Kannabilismus und Sexualität.
