230490 World Englishes in the Expanding Circle (S) (WiSe 2021/2022)

Contents, comment

This seminar is designed so that a few sessions will take place in person while the rest take place online. I will do my best to tailor this seminar in a format that accommodates your needs within the limitations the pandemic situation might impose.

In today’s world, the English language is widely spoken in various regions and countries across the globe. It also has become a vital medium of national and international communication.
In this seminar, we will look at several models that observe and analyze the spread and use of English around the world. Within the framework of Braj Kachru’s approach of the Three Circles of English (the Inner, the Outer, and the Expanding Circle), we will examine English varieties in the Expanding Circle such as English in the Netherlands, English in China, and English in Norway, just to name a few.
We will compare different Expanding Circle varieties by looking at linguistic features of these varieties as well as different domains of English (e.g in the media, in literature, etc.). We will also discuss the implications that the spread of English (and the emergence of different varieties of English) might have on language teaching.
In that context, we will critically evaluate attitudes to (local) norms in the Expanding Circle and discuss a number of hypotheses regarding the future of English(es).
