Linguistic landscapes investigate language that is visible in public spaces. They are often used to generate and analyse data about language use in multilingual contexts. In the course of the semester, you will first be introduced to the technique of linguistic landscaping and subsequently will get to know a number of different studies that use this technique in very different settings. We will discuss the various advantages and limitations of this method of data collection and analysis, but you will also spend a significant amount of time in the field. You will design and conduct your own small-scale research project that utilises linguistic landscapes and present the results of your investigation at the end of the semester.
