'Grammatikalisierung' im klassischen Sinne bezeichnet einen Sprachentwicklungsprozess, bei dem Wörter mit einer eigenständigen Bedeutung allmählich zu Elementen mit bloßer grammatischer Funktion werden. Es ist hierbei auch davon die Rede, dass sich aus Inhaltswörtern (Substantiven, Adjektiven...) Funktionswörter (Präpositionen, Auxiliare, Partikeln...) entwickeln.
Gegenstand des Seminars bilden neben Konzepte und Theorien der Grammatikalisierung ausgesuchte Fälle von Grammatikalisierungen im Deutschen. Es wird u.a. um die die Negation sowie Grammatikalisierungen im nominalen und verbalen Bereich des Deutschen. Dabei steht die Rekonstruktion des Grammatikalisierungsprozesses im Mittelpunkt. Die Einordnung der ausgesuchten Phänomene in bestehende Konzepte der Grammatikalisierung bildet einen weiteren Schwerpunkt des Seminars.
