Die Veranstaltung bildet mit dem Seminar "(Un)geordnetes Europa. Friedenssicherung und Konfliktvermeidung 1850-1914" ein Modul. Sie dient dazu, für die Diskussionen im Seminar neuere theoretisch-methodische Ansätze zur Geschichte der internationalen Beziehungen sowie historisches Kontextwissen, hauptsächlich durch Lektüre grundlegender Sekundärliteratur, zu erarbeiten. Die Sitzungen sollen in enger Verzahnung mit den Seminarsitzungen stattfinden.
