250368 Comparative Perspectives on inclusiveness around the world (BS) (SoSe 2022)

Contents, comment

This course will be held in a bilingual English-German co-teaching format with Prof. Dr. Anna Kirova (the University of Alberta, Canada) and Mark Schäffer-Trencsényi (University of Bielefeld).

The aim will be to introduce the field of inter- and transnational comparative educational research and to gain an overview of selected school systems and their functions, also in the context of making school and teaching more inclusive.

In this seminar, we will mainly deal with the Canadian school system and selected European systems: e.g. Germany, Sweden and Spain. Anna Kirova will mainly be responsible for the Canadian and Mark Schäffer-Trencsényi for the European perspective.

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with different educational systems and approaches of how to compare them. Students will learn to make their own small comparisons and reflect on the roles, functions and consequences for individuals of selected school systems from a comparative perspective. Topics we will address – among others – will be the question of how one can understand the notion of culture from philosophical and theoretical perspectives in educational contexts and of how multi- and interculturalism influence our educational systems. We will also tackle questions of islamophobia and xenophobia and how they may impact students in school in various educational contexts.

For this purpose, we will use literature and other materials in primarily English language as well as the database of the ‘European Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education’ and video material from several European coun-tries of the ‘TdiverS’ project (partly in original language with English subtitles).

Please note that Prof. Dr. Anna Kirova’s stay at Bielefeld University is mainly financed by the International Guest Lecturer Program and also in parts by the Faculty of Educational Science.
