Sonification is the auditory representation of data to enhance their understanding. In this project we will develop an embedded sonification system for supporting sport swimmers to better perceive the hand-water interaction while swimming. Practically this project involves the development of a new body-worn sensor hard-/and software by combining already tested air pressure sensors and an Beaglebone-based embedded system platform Bela (see bela.io) which allows real-time sensor data processing and synthesis directly in SuperCollider3, a modern sound programming language which is highly suitable for sonification. We plan a water-proofed solution and to use the system as a wearable sonification system, using in-ear-phones to enable users to get interactive feedback while swimming freely in the University pool. However, tests can alternatively be done in an arm-sized mini pool.
Participants will learn – depending on individual interest – how to program sonifications, how to synthesize complex sound in real-time, howto create and program embedded systems and process real-time sensor data. It provides an opportunity to design interactive feedback in an application-driven research process in an interdiscipinary context between computer science (ambient intelligence) and sports psychology.
In case this would not find enough interest for a team project, this project proposal would be also offered (in reduced/modified form)

Student information |
The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
