392276 ISY Project: Listen to your heart (Pj) (SoSe 2018)

Contents, comment

- Short Description
The idea of listening to the sounds of the human body has been around for a long time. In 1816, René Laennec invented the first stethoscope. A long tube that could be placed in the patients’ chest in order to listen to their internal sounds (e.g. the heart). Current technology developments allow us to combine the idea of the stethoscope with portable devices such as smartphones, and for example, to develop tools that contribute to monitoring and diagnostic of heart related anomalies even in remote places across the globe.

In this project, we propose the development of a mobile app to record the sounds of the human body using a stethoscope. The proposed app should record the audio signals and process them to improve the audio quality when necessary (e.g. filtering). It should allow the visualization of the recorded signal and include options to store data, go through the files and send selected files to a web server.

A comparison between the audio quality provided by the stethoscopes and microphones used is expected. The students should analyze how the frequency response and polar pattern of the used microphones influence the resulting signal.

There is a possibility to further extend this project to a master thesis by creating a supporting tool for diagnostics, that analyses and subsequently classifies the recorded data into healthy or pathological states.

Please note that the teams will be selected by the supervisors on the basis of short applications that students are expected to send to them. Registering to the project in the ekVV will only be regarded as expression of interest; it will not secure a team membership.
Please get in touch with the supervisors for information on the application procedure.
