Das Waltharius-Epos ist ein mythisches Heldenepos im vergilianischen Stil, das die Kämpfe eines Heros, Waltharius, gegen seine Feinde, die Rheinfranken unter Gunther von Worms und seinem Gefolgsmann Hagen von Tronje, zum Gegenstand hat. Grund der Kämpfe ist ein Goldschatz, den Waltharius und Hildtrud, die wie Gunther und Hagen als Kindergeiseln an Etzels Hof aufgewachsen waren, bei ihrer Flucht von Etzels Hof mitgenommen haben. Dramatischer Ort der Kämpfe sind die Waldgebiete der Vogesen.
Der Verfasser des Waltharius-Epos ist unbekannt; die Vermutung, es handle sich um den St. Gallener Mönch Ekkehard I, konnte nicht bestätigt werden. Sicher ist jedoch, dass das Epos ins späte 9. oder frühe 10. Jahrhundert zu datieren ist.
Das Seminar verfolgt zwei Stränge: Zum einen werden wir uns einen Überblick über die Literatur des Mittelalters, der Besonderheiten des Mittellateinischen und dem kulturellen Kontext verschaffen.
Zum anderen werden wir mit dem Waltharius-Epos einen zentralen mitttellateinischen Text exemplarisch lesen und interpretieren. Den Text werden wir teils einsprachig, teils zweisprachig erarbeiten. Dabei wird die Betrachtung der epischen Erzähltechnik, insbesondere der Vergleich mit Vergils Aeneis auf der einen Seite, dem Nibelungenlied auf der anderen Seite im Zentrum stehen.
