Migration processes are multidimensional, heterogeneous and complex. Investigating them means to explain and describe the structures, policies and processes of migration but also the changing identities of people involved in migration trajectories. Consequently, the core of migration research deals not only with questions about the nature of migration processes but also with questions about which structures and policies are involved in hindering or fostering them. Migration is an interdisciplinary field of study which has attracted research designs which employ a large array of both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
The goal of this seminar is to equip students with knowledge of epistemological and methodological foundations of qualitative research strategies and their possible application to research questions related to migration research. In this context, we will assess the specificities of migration research and how they may interfere with or favor the application of qualitative research techniques. In this context, we will specifically take note of research with undocumented migrants, transnational contexts and gender and migration. Students who wish to complete a written assignment are encouraged to undertake a small empirical, qualitative study on a migration related issue.

This course is aiming to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical excercises. Participants are required to actively participate in the seminars through group work activities in which data collection and analysis methods, sampling strategies and methodological designs are going to be tried and tested.
