This course will familiarise students with the rich English literature of the Romantic period (1780s to 1830s). We will analyse selected poems by canonical writers usually labelled the first (Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge) and second (Byron, Shelley, Keats) generations of Romantic poets. Going beyond the canon, we will also pay attention to working-class poets (such as John Clare), women writers (such as Anna Letitia Barbauld and Charlotte Smith) and poets promoting the abolition of slavery (e.g. by William Cowper). Given that the Romantic period is notable not only for its poetry, we will finally turn to Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein (1818), which is famous for its multiple narrative perspectives and its ambiguous character conception of Victor Frankenstein’s ‘creature’.
Studying these exemplary texts, we will engage in close readings and put to practice the analytical categories introduced in the Basic Module 2 ‘Introduction to Literary Analysis and Interpretation’.
