300258 Ethnomethodology (MA: Soziologische Methoden - qualitativ) (S) (WiSe 2021/2022)

Contents, comment

Ethnomethodology has always been somewhat of an irritant for sociology, questioning many of sociology’s basic assumptions. Harold Garfinkel, ethnomethodology’s founder, insisted that sociologists had no other tools at their disposal than does any member of a society, and that what can be said about how the social world works is undetachable from the situation it is brought about in. In this course, we will look at what these assumptions imply for sociological inquiry. We will discuss ethnomethodological studies, looking at the different research fields that have developed from ethnomethodological thought. We will also conduct a number of miniature studies into the situated order of everyday life in order to achieve first hand understanding of how ethnomethodology works.

~~ I hope to conduct as much of this course as possible in presence. This depends on space capacities and forthcoming university regulations regarding teaching for the wintersemester 2021/22. ~~
