Im Jahr der Präsidentschaftswahl scheinen die politischen Verhältnisse in den Vereinigten Staaten unberechenbarer denn je. Wird Donald Trump schaffen, was nur ein einziges Mal in der US-Geschichte einem ehemaligen Präsidenten gelang? Wie erklärt sich der anhaltende Erfolg des nach einem spektakulären Wahlkampf im "Coronajahr" 2020 abgewählten 45. Präsidenten? Warum können selbst ein Aufstand, zahllose Affären, Ermittlungen, hohe Strafzahlungen, gewichtige Gerichtsprozesse und potente Gegenkandidaten in der eigenen Partei Donald Trump immer noch nicht "aufhalten"? Was kennzeichnet den sog. Trumpismus, welche strukturellen und funktionellen Bedingungen gehen mit diesem einher (und ermöglichen ihn)? In diesem Seminar werden diverse (kürzere) Analysen (Essays und Kommentare) aus US- und europäischen Medien gelesen, Reportagen und Dokumentationen betrachtet. Trotz der gewählten Fokussierung auf Trumps Exzeptionalität – bewusst verbunden mit einigen biografischen Rekonstruktionen – sollen auch die besonderen Verhältnisse bzw. Voraussetzungen des politischen Systems der USA berücksichtigt werden. Angestrebt wird insofern eine Breitenschau politischer, organisatorischer und personenspezifischer Komponenten eines Verständnisses des "Systems Trump". Relevante soziologische Ansätze im Bereich der politischen Analyse werden einbezogen. Das Seminar begleiten zwei einschlägige Monografien als Semesterlektüre (siehe Literaturangaben).
