230246 Narratives of Failure (S) (WiSe 2018/2019)

Contents, comment

“We can [also] recognize failure as a way of refusing to acquiesce to dominant logics of power and discipline and as a form of critique.” - Judith Halberstam, The Queer Art of Failure (2011)

We fail tasks, tests and exams, we miss deadlines, fail job interviews, or have to face break ups. We all face moments of defeat. To avoid failure, we are offered an array of methods for self-improvement. Whole catalogues of what we should or should not do come to our aid to prevent us from failing.
The ever-increasing amount of self-help books, and the never-ending self-improvement strategies narrate failure as just another step on the way to success. While at the same time narratives evolve around failure that feature dystopian scenarios as failure’s only possible consequence. But what does it mean to fail and who is entitled to define failure as such? In this seminar we will take a closer look at the construction of narratives of failure and their underlying structures. Instead of reducing failure to a category we will look at failure as a strategy of criticism by analyzing products of popular culture in literature, film, and music through the lens of discourse theory, post-structuralism and queer theory.

Please note that this is a student seminar organized and conducted by Anne Lappert, BA, supervised by Dr Angela Stock.
