The aim of this course is to familiarise students with the social scientific research of far-right pol- itics and protest, and to provide students with the conceptual tools and methodological clues to investigate for themselves. In this course, we will discuss the terms and conceptualisations used to study the far right and their manifestations in far-right parties and voters, mobilisation and movements, online activity, and political violence. We will consider explanations for the rise and success as well as decline and failure of the far right across these areas. Crucially, this course will cover these topics from a comparative perspective, underscoring the commonalities and varia- tions between different contexts. In addition to considering the empirical substance of far-right phenomena, students will be encouraged to scrutinise the methodological tools applied in stud- ies of the far right, to evaluate how well a particular methodology is answering a given research question. Taken together, students in this course will acquire knowledge about far-right activity in diverse social sphere and will hone analytical skills used to research and evaluate the far right

Requirements for participation, required level

Students will benefit from familiarity with research literature on political parties, social movements, and/or political violence. But relevant parts of these research fields will be introduced in the course where pertinent.

STUDY CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:

--read assigned course materials and participate in seminar discussions

--Two discussion notes (individual assignment, each 1-2 single-spaced pages) from different ‘parts’ of the course, submitted prior to the week’s seminar
----The note should summarise and evaluate a recent (no earlier than 2010) journal article that relates to the seminar session’s topic
----The note should also include at least three points/questions for discussion.
----For example, a student could submit for Class 5 (from Part II, on far-right parties) a discussion note on Arzheimer & Berning’s 2019 article on AfD voters (not listed as assigned reading). Since their second discussion note should be from a different part of the course, the student might then submit a note for Class 8 (from Part III, on far- right movements) on Berntzen & Weisskricher’s 2016 article (also not listed as assigned reading) comparing PEGIDA movement organisations in four countries.

--One short (10 minutes maximum) group presentation of a method of studying the far right
----A presentation of a method should introduce the method, explain how (e.g., for what research topics) it is useful for studying the far right, and discuss at least one example
of applied research.
----For example, a group could present regression analysis by briefly reviewing the logic of regression techniques, explaining that it is useful for detecting correlations in large sets of data, and explaining how Authors X & Y used regression analysis on survey data to detect predictors of electoral support for far-right parties.
