Contents, comment

The life sciences include many strange entities and processes—phenotypes, niches, holobionts, evolutionary drift, clades, functions, noncoding genes, ecosystem regime shifts. What is the nature of these strange objects, and are they real? This course investigates ontological issues in the philosophy of biology. We will start with some background on positions about scientific metaphysics and realism. Then we will survey a number of specific topics in the ontology of biology, likely including genes, evolutionary processes, individuality, species, andsome of the strange entities listed above. While the focus will be on biology proper, we may also consider some concepts in the medical and social sciences, such as mental illness or gender.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

Some basic familiarity with biology would be helpful though not required. Course instruction, readings, and assessment will be in English only.
