230456 Contextualising post-apartheid films from South Africa (S) (SoSe 2022)

Contents, comment

South African films, most of them from the first 15 post-apartheid years, will be at the core of the seminar. Reading, online research and input from the lecturer, who grew up in South Africa during the apartheid era, will provide informational and theoretical context and form the basis for further analysis and discussion.

Requirements for participation, required level

In focusing on apartheid, the struggle against apartheid and the early post-apartheid period, we will be examining an example of extreme, institutionalised racial oppression, injustice and structural violence.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

Participants will contribute to the weekly sessions by, for example, researching topics related to the themes under consideration and uploading brief summaries of their findings and completing while-watching and post-watching tasks related to the films selected; these contributions will be included in a digital portfolio in the Lernraum.
Module papers (in the form of research papers or other projects) related to the seminar can be discussed and individually planned with me.
