250182 Inclusive and exclusive practices in Germany and Canada (S) (WiSe 2021/2022)

Contents, comment

In this seminar, we communicate mostly in English: Submissions (Studienleistungen/Prüfungsleistungen) can be made in German as well as English. One of the aims of this course is to enable the students to train their English and expand their existing knowledge along the global topic of the course. The lecturers will be happy to provide you with language support. In any case, we can always use German, should there be the need for it.

Inclusive education has become a global norm, so that the debates on inclusive school and classroom development also have stronger international and transnational references.

Thus, in this seminar we will take a comparative look at developments in Germany and Canada. In fact, this will be a collaborative course with two lecturers, from the University of Bielefeld (Mark Schäffer) and the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada (Shiva Zarezadeh-Kheibari).

You will be able to take a transnational view on the topics of the course and engage in conversation with the transnational lecturers. In this seminar we use, among other digital tools, the innovative Perusall platform in order to let the students develop a basis for international comparisons in educational science and research findings on German/Canadian inclusive school and classroom development. The students will also work on identifying similarities, differences and special features with regard to central thematic focal points of the inclusion reform in both countries using literature and video material provided by the lecturers. The students are guided how to conduct their own literature searches on topics relevant to the seminar as well.
In this course, students gain an understanding of the inter- and transnational connections of the contemporary school system with regard to inclusive and exclusive practices that stretch out far beyond the named countries and develop their intercultural, international and comparative skills. Thus, they will be able to understand inter- and transnational phenomena in education in their respective political, cultural, social and historical contexts.

In addition, the digital competencies of students will be strengthened by using the named innovative digital platforms.
