This course will take place synchronously via zoom, during the regular course time.
The aim of this course is to give you the analytical tools to analyse and interpret literary texts in the genres of drama (Henry V) and verse (narrative poetry, e.g. Beowulf; and lyrical poetry, e.g. sonnets). As you see, our primary material will be mainly early modern (a.k.a. Elizabethan/Jacobean, a.k.a. Shakespearean.
Our discussions will be based on what you learnt or are currently learning in the Analysing lectures, so connections between all three BM2 courses will be made.
I will upload texts or point you to online sources.
You will be expected to read a whole Shakespeare play, King Henry V, in addition to shorter poems and passages of narrative prose. You should buy a print edition of Henry V, because that is the only way to academically read a Shakespeare text. Go for New Cambridge Shakespeare (ed. Andrew Gurr): https://www.amazon.de/King-Henry-New-Cambridge-Shakespeare/dp/0521612640/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
or New Oxford (ed. Gary Taylor): https://www.amazon.de/Henry-Oxford-Shakespeare-Worlds-Classics/dp/0199536511/ref=sr_1_2?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=henry+V+gary+taylor&qid=1601643286&sr=8-2
or Penguin (ed. Claire McEachern): https://www.amazon.de/Henry-Pelican-Shakespeare-Claire-McEachern/dp/0143130242/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=henry+V+penguin&qid=1601643355&sr=8-1
If you absolutely cannot buy a proper edition of the play, please down load the PDF from the website of the Folger Shakespeare Library: https://shakespeare.folger.edu/downloads/pdf/henry-v_PDF_FolgerShakespeare.pdf. - This is the ONLY online version that you are allowed to use.
You CANNOT use random internet texts or German editions or any other version that doesn't have textual notes, annotations and line numbering. This is non-negotiable.
