Sociologists rarely reflect on what constitutes justice, fairness, or equity. They take it mostly for granted and often even claim to speak in its name. Should this look a bit arrogant to you, while still thinking that questions of fairness are central to many, if perhaps not all social affairs, this seminar might offer you a way out – at least intellectually. Ken Binmore has come forward with perhaps the most solid explanation of the evolution of fairness-norms. He approaches the issue from a game-theory perspective, which gives his account a quite unusual degree of precision, and in the end is inclined to embrace egalitarian fairness norms for today´s social world.
In this seminar we will closely follow his book “Natural Justice” (2011).

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
