300461 Concepts and Contestations about Peace (MA: Politische Soziologie) (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

The concept of peace is at the center of the seminar. We will look at different ideas and conceptions of what peace means: Is the absence of violence enough to speak of peace? If not, what other characteristics constitute peace? The seminar is an introduction to understanding a range of concepts of peace that are discussed in international relations and peace and conflict research. The focus is on which ideas of peace underlie the respective conceptions, as well as which actors and social characteristics and processes influence and constitute peace. Among other concepts, pacifist, realist, liberal, local, hybrid and authoritarian understandings of peace will be examined and discussed in a critical manner.
