In many areas, our quality of life today is also based on the continuous discovery of new reactions, substances and materials, the development of new processes and research into biochemical and physiological mechanisms. Therefore, the work in modern Chemistry is extraordinarily interdisciplinary and, depending on the focus, also includes sub-areas of physics, mathematics, computer science, biology or medicine.
In the Bachelor of Chemistry, theoretical, methodological and practical expertise in both Chemistry and other natural sciences is taught in lectures, tutorials and laboratory courses. In the laboratory practicals, students learn to work on chemical problems independently and to carry out the necessary preliminary research with the support of natural science journals and books. The emphasis is on the practical and safe handling of chemicals, and at the same time knowledge of safety and environmental issues is taught.
After the basic chemical training in the first two years of study in the areas of expertise Inorganic, Organic, Physical and Theoretical Chemistry, a differentiated specialisation takes place in the third year. Students can choose between two profiles:

In the Experimental Chemistry profile, the specialist knowledge in Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry is further deepened within the framework of specialisation modules, which each have half theoretical and half practical components.

In the Theoretical Chemistry profile, theoretical training in Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry is continued and extended training in Theoretical Chemistry takes place.

The students thus acquire sound knowledge and methodological competence in the core chemical subjects Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. In addition, they acquire many key competences in the course of their studies that are advantageous for the professional world. For example, they must be able to familiarise themselves quickly and independently with new subject areas, work in a team, organise themselves and be able to work under pressure and with motivation.
The Bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry combines a very broad spectrum of educational goals with a wide variety of requirements. It is only the first step on the path to professional training that qualifies students for jobs in teaching and research, in the chemical industry, in the school sector and in business and administration. Many of these fields of activity usually require at least a subsequent Master's degree programme, often also a doctorate.
