For information on the duration of the modul, refer to the courses of study in which the module is used.
This module offers an introduction to the art and science of computing meanings of natural language expressions. It covers the basics of formal semantics and supplements them with implementations, in order to take the students from the theory of meaning construction to actual meaning computation. The module is aimed at computer science students interested in applying computational means to the study of language, as well as linguistic students interested in implementing their ideas.
The main topic of the course will be the composition of typed meaning representations for a fragment of natural language, their model-theoretic interpretation and their use in inference mechanisms. This approach is at the core of many formal semantic theories and therefore constitutes a solid foundation for everyone interested in the formal approach to meaning. The module presents all necessary theoretic background as well as the basics of implementation. Possible key aspects are quantification and anaphora; further topics could also consider the dynamic view on meanings as updates on the knowledge of discourse participants, thus broadening the scope beyond mere truth conditions.
Grundkenntnisse Programmierung
Basic knowledge in first-order logic and lambda calculus as well as background in programming will prove helpful but are not mandatory.

Ungraded / Graded Module Examination:
The (partial) examination of the module can be performed as "ungraded" in some study programs at the students choice. Before the examination a respective determination must be carried out, a later modification (graded - ungraded) is impossible. If the "ungraded" option is chosen, it is not possible to include this module in a study program where this module is deemed to enter the calculation of the overall grade.
Statement of Necessity for two Module Partial Examinations:
The acquired knowledge in Computational Semantics is accessed by means of exercises within the scope of the portfolio, and is further evaluated in the context of an own project in Seminar II.
Module structure: 0-1 bPr, 1-2 uPr 1
The portfolio consists of exercises accompanying Seminar I, which have to be successfully addressed (reaching 50% of all obtainable points and presenting the solutions).
Seminar II requires a term paper (8-16 pages) or a project for successfully completion.
