The Bachelor's degree programme Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences is aimed at students already enrolled in the Bielefeld Model Course of Studies in Medicine (state examination) and begins at the same time as the second semester of medical school.
Students learn to view medical-related issues from other disciplines and to explore them using the scientific methods of the respective disciplines. Furthermore, the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences offers an additional scientific qualification which can also be classified as a quality-assuring element on the way to a structured doctorate to become a doctor medicinae.
The Bachelor's degree programme offers those students who decide not to work in medicine (as a physician) the opportunity to obtain further qualifications in a connectable master's degree programme such as Interdisciplinary Biomedicine, Public Health or Nursing Sciences or to obtain a first professional qualification for a variety of non-medical professions in the healthcare sector. Depending on the profiling direction, the focus is on different task fields and competences.
The study programme picks up current developments in the field of health care. Therefore, the modules of the interdisciplinary profiling are an essential part of the Bachelor's degree programme. Students choose one of five profiling directions based or depending on their interests, each of them focusing on different content and methods.
The Bachelor's degree programme also allows students to acquire a foundation in human medicine. Individual modules from ten organ- and topic-centered blocks as well as essential modules from the longitudinal strands Clinical Thinking and Clinical Practice and Scientific Thinking and Acting are therefore integrated in the bachelor's degree from the module tableau of the medical degree programme.
In the last so-called profile semester, students pursue their own research project within the framework of the chosen profiling direction which leads to the bachelor's thesis.
