The First World War was characterized not least by blurring the line between the front, where men laid down their lives for their country, and the rear, where women kept home fires burning in preparation of men’s return from the war. Between 1914 and 1918 women were drawn into keeping up the war effort on an unprecedented scale. This course will consider the variety of ways in which women of different class backgrounds became involved in the war in a variety of capacities; it will look into changes in women’s living conditions and finally assess the impact of the war on British women’s condition.
The relevant literature will be made available at the start of the semester.
