Contents of the subject German as a Second Language and Multilingualism
In the Bachelor of Arts degree programme ‘German as a Second Language and Multilingualism’ (DaZuM), students examine both topics from a linguistic, acquisitional, diagnostic and teaching perspective.
The programme places particular emphasis on multilingualism in everyday life and at school as well as on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). Bielefeld University also offers students the opportunity to study ‘German as a Second Language and Multilingualism’ within the degree programme in primary school teaching either with or without integrated special education.
The central goal of the DaZuM Bachelor of Arts programme is to give students the skills they need to support all pupils in their overall language competence, so that it forms a bridge to further educational success.
The DaZuM Bachelor of Arts degree programme is for students with above-average skills in both communication and linguistic analysis, who are open, appreciative and empathetic towards other people, and who have an interest in teaching language subjects. Diverse experiences with multilingualism and/or multiculturalism are also an asset that students will be able to effectively incorporate into their studies.

What are the access requirements?
Access to the Bachelor programme is granted to those who have a university entrance qualification suitable for Germany (e. g. German ‘Abitur’).
Special conditions apply to applicants with a foreign certificate of education.
Likewise, special conditions apply to those qualified in vocational education and training.
What formalities are important?
Course start
Studies can be commenced in both winter and summer semesters. Courses are targeted to commencing studies in winter semester. Student counselling to plan the course of studies is recommended.

Application, admission, and enrolment
The study places are not subject to any admission restrictions (numerus clausus). Nevertheless, you need to apply within the currently applicable application deadlines. Afterwards, however, you can submit your application for enrolment directly in the application and status portal, provided that you meet the access requirements.

Please note that Education Sciences is always a compulsory component of a degree programme with a teaching option (see study structure model) and therefore necessarily requires an application for a study place.
