The Master's degree programme in Mathematics will be offered in English from the winter semester 2025/26.

Mathematics is a very old and traditional science and at the same time is so important for our future. Whether IT, artificial intelligence, Data Science, Finance or natural sciences in general - no future technology can do without mathematics. Mathematicians are therefore in high demand on the labour market. They are needed, for example, as data scientists or analysts, as actuaries for insurance companies or banks, or as IT consultants for AI applications to tackle the challenges of modern society.

As part of a master's course in mathematics, you will deepen your skills in recognising and analysing structures, modelling facts and solving problems, including those where visualisation fails. You are therefore perfectly trained to develop answers to the big (future) questions. As part of the master's course, you will be introduced to current research questions in mathematics and learn how to plan, carry out and complete a research project independently, i.e. in addition to specialist expertise, you will also acquire professional project management skills.

The Bielefeld Faculty of Mathematics enjoys an excellent reputation in the international research landscape. Many international collaborations and the high number of mathematicians who choose Bielefeld for a research stay are proof of this. The Faculty's special profile and proven strength in research enable a wide range of specialisation options. The master's course in Bielefeld is characterised by a great deal of freedom of choice, so that you can pursue your interests in a very attractive research environment and thus experience the fascination of research in scientific collaboration at an early stage.
As in every mathematics degree programme, learning and working together is very important. You work very closely together in teams and are also individually supervised by students from higher semesters, doctoral students and postdocs (tutors) in tutorials accompanying the lectures.
